Assignment #2
My 4 favorite sites:
1) www.booksforkidsblog.blogspot.com/
* I love this site because it is managed by a retired librarian. She gives book reviews of all K-12 literature and categorizes each one with a tag. For example, she reviewed the Magic Tree House book, "Sea Monsters." Below the review is a tag for Beginning Chapter Books, Fantasy Fiction, Marine Animals, and Oceanography. Click on one of these and you will find a whole list of books with the same tag!
2) funschool.kaboose.com/index.html
* There are a TON of games on this quality website and they are all educational. There are trivia games, coloring pages, and science experiments kids can try at home (and it gives the explanation of the science behind it.)
3) www.starfall.com/
* This site is fantastic for early/emergent readers. It focuses on phonics, uses catchy jingles to help children remember the rules of grammar, and lets the student go at their own pace. If you teach primary, this is a keeper.
4) http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/home.jsp
* I use this website a lot, as well as read their magazine for teachers, "Instructor." Here you will find lesson plans, teacher resources, and anything related to the classroom. What I find useful is the fact that you can browse by grade.
2 ways to use Delicious:
1) Share favorite sites with students and colleagues.
* Since I have already researched the sites, I can save other teachers time by referring them to my delicious account. I can also refer students to certain websites that I have already researched for a particular topic. This use can go both ways: I can click on tags from other teachers to see what interesting sites they have found.
2) Give students a way to organize their research.
* When students research information for a project, Delicious provides a way for them to organize the information they find on the internet. They can also use this information from any computer so that they can continue their searching at home.
